CHAPTER THIRTEEN

HALEY

"How could you do this to us, Haley? After all we did for you!" says my mother on the other end of the line.

I close my eyes and try to take a deep breath. I should have known something like this could happen. The next Lux club event has, after all, been advertised all week as the most important event of the entire season. And of course, that puts my Dad and his club, NYC Empire, in check.

On the other end of the line Mom is still crying. I try to calm down myself because I know she won't do it.

"Do you even understand that everything you've done, everything you have, is because of us? It was your father and I who paid for that expensive degree, so you could apply all that knowledge in that sleazy club?"

Without realizing it, I've been biting the inside of my cheek in a nervous grimace, and I'm only aware of it when I finally feel the taste of blood sticking to my tongue.

"Mom, you and Dad don't want to listen to me. You never want to," I reply calmly, trying to control the tone of my voice.

"Explain to me then, Haley, everything you have to say. What is that important thing that justifies your actions?"

"That it's my life, Mom," I reply calmly. "And I'm not doing any of this for revenge. I love you and Dad, but I don't plan to continue living under the shadow of his desires."

"Under the shadow of...?" my mother holds her breath, obviously upset. "You should be ashamed, child. Ashamed of everything you're doing to your family."

"I'm not a child, Mom, and I don't plan to listen to this anymore. We'll talk when we can do it like two grown people."

She continues to yell. I don't stop to listen to her, but instead cut the call short.

Immediately, my phone starts ringing with calls, messages, and voicemails. I know my mother is upset, and will do anything to be heard, but I don't care. I don't plan to listen to this anymore.

I don't plan to keep doing it, because for almost two weeks my mother has done nothing but scream into the phone and demand that I come home, or else ask me to call off Club Allure event.

This time, I'm not the one who's going to give in.

As the phone continues to ring, I finally turn it off and disengage from it, leaving it on the coffee table that rests in front of the huge couch in the living room. In the morning I'll have a new batch of swearing, but I'll deal with that later.

"Haley?"

Above my head I hear Jackson's voice, slightly hoarse from sleep.

I look up, noticing that his eyes meet mine. His hair is disheveled, and his torso is bare, as he usually sleeps shirtless.

"What's wrong, Haley?"

Jackson's brow furrows. He comes down the stairs, walks over to me, and looks at me with concern.

I sigh. "It's nothing... " I start to say.

"Come on, Haley. Don't lie," Jackson asks me.
